All info is in the cert I posted.

No knowledge on seafaring, but would think with the date issued, 1851, that he was a mate. Possibly years to become a master, but could be wrong.

Employed in the capacities of App Mate & Masters 17 years in the British Merchant Service in the Casting & Foreign Trades.

Has his signature

So looks like he was a master.
