Thanks everyone!

The Leicester baptism is interesting
If he was baptised there I wonder why?

As its been mentioned that his Dad was Thomas, possibly born c 1715, this baptism may be relevant?

Very sorry but that Thomas Hilton, son of William and Eleanor, was buried 28 May 1718 at Stathern (same location as the baptism - 14 August 1715).
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks BumbleB, I didn't check it out any further which is why I said 'may' be relevant.

May explain possible Leics bapt and name Major ;D

Baptism: 30 Jan 1741/2 St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire
Thomas Hilton - Son of Thomas Hilton & Esther
Abode: Whitefield
Occupation: Soldier*******

Just wanted to mention that "Major" is also a common Gypsy boys name.
