In 1871 there are two households:

1 Town End, John Tyson, 52, farmer 106 acres
2 Town End, Jane Thompson, 50, farmer, 80 acres

I’ve only listed the head of household here, but the numerals 1 and 2 actually appear in the record.

And maps (see eg reply #7) are consistent with there being two separate farms.

In the 1861 census the Coulthards of Town End –Robert, Ann and Kate Fox Coulthard (2 months)– are visitors at Langley Park, Corney, the home of Anne's parents John and Elizabeth Brocklebank. John Coulthard's occupation is recorded as Landed Proprietor, Farming 55 acres. I assume that this is a reference to Town End.

According to the Coulthard history linked above, the Coulthards sold up in 1870. There is no obvious correspondence between this 1861 acreage (52) and the acreages listed in 1871 (106 and 80).

11 October 1879: West Cumberland Times

The property is described as 63 acres, with Mrs Thompson occupying "the principal portion". In 1881 Jane Thompson, 60, is living with her son Joseph, where she is a retired farmer.

think that part of the confusion here (is it just me?) is that –certainly by the latter part of the 19th century– the term "Town End" was used to refer to a locality and not just a farm. Here is my evidence:

In the March 7th 1895 edition of the Cumberland Pacquet there is a farm sale advertised. The advert is headed "Town End, Wilton" and it describes a sale of the property of "Messrs Haile (who are retiring after an unbroken tenancy at Town End of 54 years)..."

In the 1891 census two brothers –John and William Hail– are at Beck Brow which is the farm just to the north of the presumed Town End Farm (see map linked in reply #7). The Beck Brow entry is immediately preceded by Jonathan Tyson, Town End Farm.

Finally, for what it's worth, the house situated to the west of the junction with Low Winder Lane (which led to Beck Brow, not sure if that is still there) is currently displaying a sign: Town End Farmhouse.

Dixon and Tyson families had connections going back to the marriage of Isaac Dixon and Elizabeth Tyson in 1765

Hello

This is, I think, the tree for Ann Dixon

At Wilton-
 Isaac Dixon (c1742-3 Jul 1810) m Elizabeth Dixon? (c – ( Oct 1810)

At Haile (not Town End)
Isaac Dixon (1770-1843) m Elizabeth (Betty)  Hellon (1776-1850

At Town End Farm
Eldest Son Isaac Dixon (1797-1877) m 1836  Hannah Middleton (c1809 -1861)
Still at Home in Wilton Haile
Second Son John Dixon b 1800 Died 1834 at Wilton  Haile
And Daughter  Ann Dixon (1801-1843) m William Tyson

Some of this can be confirmed , but not all.

Still looking at the Farm(s)

Best wishes

Octo

Odd Points
1.   Isaac Dixon  appointed Overseer for 1864-5 for Haile
2.   Isaac Dixon tenant at sale of Town End Farm( 80 acres 2 Roods and 25 perches)
At auction In 1852
3.  May be the closemess of the relationships has some relevence to the Marriag Bond between William and Ann?

Hello

In the early changes of hands of Town End Farm the Dixons are described as Tenants.

The only reference to ownership is in the UK Land Tax Redemption  record of 1798, mentioned earlier. This identifies the qwner as Wilton Wood

There was , at that time, a family of shipbuilders in Whitehaven , one of whom was named Wilton.
The Family also had connections to Town End

Quote
'The early life of John Wood prior to 1751 so far remains a mystery. It seems most likely that after leaving home at Yew Tree Farm, Town End, Wilton, Haile he was apprenticed to a Whitehaven ship builder and perhaps went to sea before setting up the yard at Whitehaven.'

It seems possible that this Wilton Wood was the actual owner of Town End Farm

Best wishes
