Firstly thanks again for all the info; I've added all the info posted and I now info up to 1940. He passed exams in 1940 and in 1941 he was involved in convoy and mine-sweeping work until his ship was attacked in August 1941. He was evacuated to Cambridge after his hospital on the south coast was bombed. I know nothing of his war service after that.
I'm trying to find the ships that he served on. Is there a website where I can search for his service records? I now have Ancestry but nothing on there.

Records of service for the deceased are held by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and The National Archives (TNA). Who you apply to depends on:

- when the person served
- which service they were in
- their rank

Apply for records held by the MOD
Royal Navy (including Royal Marines)
