He was a farm Servant and was charged with Murder and His Trial was in Westmeath on the 25th July 1834 he received a Life Sentence.
This info comes right out of the NSW Australia Convict Indents records, so he did end up there.
That said, Wexflyer is correct in saying the newspapers said James was to be hung, and in chains, on the upcoming Monday (from sentencing).
Some last minute event must of occurred which caused his sentence to be changed, luckily for him.
I have run into this before, and rarely, could find a note in the papers as to the sentence being reduced. No such luck finding a follow-up news clip for James though.
