Re Aghadowy post #14 with alternates to Christian names.

I was interested to see Jeremiah on that list with alternate "Darby". Does anyone know why?

I have marriages (c1840-1860) for 2 children of my 3x gt Jeremiah Wallace where his name was recorded as James Wallace, whereas in other siblings his name was recorded as Jeremiah or spelling variant. Such as in the 1843 marriage of my 2x gt grandmother. Tithes for Easky has Jeremiah but both father and son (also Jeremiah) had died by 1857 so  are not on Griffiths.  Just the widow, Mary another son and a grandson who were both named Robert.

Here's an old RootsChat thread on the subject.

Thank you KG.

I am fairly sure the Wallaces were probably Scottish in origin and I don't think the name Darby was ever  used in my family.

The name Jeremiah continued down to my gt uncle Jeremiah (who did not marry)  but I had wondered if Jeremiah was recorded as James in some marriage records because of the association of the name Jeremiah with the fate of the prophet and what he prophesied.

Of course it is possible my 3x gt grandfather  had a second name, James, but I think that he was born about 1760  to 1770 and that may have been a little early for second names to be usual.
