Hello Sandra,
I replied to your post on the General Ireland board but I've now looked at your previous posts. I see that you presumably found the names of Patrick MCCANN and Jane MURPHY from the marriage certificate (from SP) of their son Daniel MCCANN in 1871 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire; and that you have approximate dates and birthplaces of Patrick and Jane from information from the 1861 Kilbirnie census index provided on the Ayrshire board.
Have you noted the following in the IGI (might or might not be your Patrick and Jane but it seems quite likely):
*A Patrick MCCANN m a Jane MURPHY, Apr 1844, New Monkland, Lanarkshire
In Dalry, Ayrshire (extracted from the Statutory Register) the IGI has:
*John MCCANN, b 11 Dec 1855, parents Patrick MCCANN and Jane MURPHY
*James MCCANN, b 7 Mar 1858, parents Patrick MCCANN and Jane MURPHY
From the 1861 census information, Mary A aged 15 was b Airdrie (in New Monkland) so the 1844 New Monkland marriage looks likely. The next child Rosa, aged 13, is listed as born Kilbirnie so this gives you a fairly restricted date for the move of the family from New Monkland, Lanarkshire to Ayrshire.
I am wondering whether the age of James on the 1861 census might be a misreading of 3 as 5? That would fit with the IGI birth entries - and Dalry is not all that far from Kilbirnie.
It might well be worth getting from ScotlandsPeople the 1855 birth cert for John in Dalry because birth certs in 1855 (first year of statutory registration) were particularly informative. Of course, as this John was born in December, he might not have been registered until 1856 - so might show as 1856 in the index and the cert might not have all the wonderful 1855 information.
Incidentally, I note that there is also in the IGI another John MCCANN b in 1855 in Ayrshire - John b Kilbirnie on 21 Dec but he has different parents, James MCCANN and Agness MUIR. And, in 1858, two other James MCCANNs are listed as born in Ayrshire but they have different parents - one also b Dalry and one b Kilbirnie!
It would also be worth looking up later censuses for Patrick and Jane (if they survived) - 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses are on SP - in case there is a better birthplace than just 'Ireland'.
Also their death certificates which will list the name and occupation of father, and name and maiden surname of mother (if known). Remember, women are indexed under both married surname and maiden surname (if known) on SP. So you can search for a Jane MCCANN and a Jane MURPHY (if you don't find her, you might need to use wildcards just in case she's listed as Jean or Jeanie etc; and wildcards might also be needed for MCCANN if you don't find it indexed thus). If you find entries in the same year and place for both names for a person of the right age (though note that there was a period when age at death was not indexed), you can be fairly confident you have the right person.
Good luck,
JAP
