Fiowes, May I ask what address is given on the birth certificate of Eric Vivian in 1905.

Softly posted the 1901 census above, complete with the reference numbers, for Mary Ann, Alice and George

I think you have 1911 already with Mary Ann, Alice and Eric

If you look for Alice Spanner on 1881 and 1891 you should find her with Mary Ann.

They've both died before 1921

Now moving on to Esther and Lilian, you should be able to find them together in 1911. Esther's probably the easier name to search for as it's less common.

There's an advanced free search on 1921 on FindMyPast where you can specify searching for people living with a named person - that's  how I confirmed Eric, Esther and Lilian were together.

From 1918 onwards you can find them together on electoral registers as they had gained the vote. Eric appears at the same address once he's 21.

On the 1939 register, on Ancestry, Eric is indexed as a separate household to Esther and Lilian, but if you look at the image  you'll see they're together.

Hope that helps

Hi Mabel, just having a senior moment I think, perhaps you could check out as well. In 1901 census Alice's pob is recorded as Isle of Wight. I notice on freebmd 2 Alice Spanner's born 1858, 1 Isle of Wight the other Alverstoke. Just wondering if I have the correct birth and death for Alice. There is a 1911 marriage for an Alice Spanner to Henry J Porter.

Hello both,
I found the 1901 census listing where George is a visitor, Alice is 39 and as Eric was born 3 years later in 1904 I suspect this is the correct age for her.
Ann Voller is again a lodging house keeper, two things strike me as odd
There have not been any other visitors unless it was very small
Is this a house of ill repute?

The will of George says “ my daughter … and Eric Vivian Johnson 12 Altenburg Gardens Lavender Hill London now under the guardianship of Miss Deighton 12 Altenburg Gardens “ dated 31.7.1923.
Eric would have been old enough to live and work independently so does this mean he required carers?

She's a bit variable with place and date of birth, but consistantly with Mary Ann

1891 - b 1860 Gosport
1901 - b 1862 IOW Ryde
1911 - b 1859 Gosport

She's not the one who married, as there's a burial for Alice Caroline Spanner aged 59 on 28 Dec 1917. Same address in Forest Row as 1901 and 1911

Alice Caroline Spanner
Baptism    3 Apr 1859 Holy Trinity, Ryde, Hampshire, England
Father    Charles Spanner
Mother    Ann

The family are in Gosport in 1861 and 1871, so I think she generally uses that as her pob as that's where she was brought up

That's the address I've been finding

Don;t forget people did not legally come of age until they were 21 in those days. Edith Deighton was his legal guardian until he reached that age in December 1925.

Mary Ann Voller had lodgers in 1881 and 1891 - the later year her lodger was a navy chaplain so I doubt she ran a house of ill repute.

Mabel,
So sorry but I missed this question today.
The details on his birth certificate are

4th Dec 1904 38, Portland Dr, Kennington Town , London, England

I have been ploughing through inherited family papers and found a note from Annie May Dale (Johnson) his potential half sister in which she notes Eric’s birth certificate has been sent to Miss Deighton. This was sent after George’s death so the will would have informed them if they didn’t already know about him

I am new to this website and I cannot work out how to post replies very well, nor for a couple of days how to retrieve this conversation thread.

Hello,
There are many Lawton graves in Hanley cemetery, I have photos of a few and some are not related to me, would you like them?

Yes!  Your query caught my eye as Lawton is my surname. No relation to Emily Lawton though...a very common name in the Potteries area
