Help deciphering a burial register entry please
« on: Sunday 27 October 24 09:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

I'm researching the Wood Family from Croxden in Staffordshire, and think that the attached burial register entry from FindMyPast may relate to my 6x Gt Grandfather, George Wood, who was baptised in Croxden on 2nd October 1720.

However I'm struggling with some of the handwriting. To my mind it clearly states that George Wood was buried February the 22nd 1799 - but what are the other words saying? And is the "upward stroke" after "Wood" intentional?

Are the words telling me where George was living at the time of his death ? - possibly something like "from over Crutton"? I think the word ending with "tton"is referring to a place - presumably not too far from Croxden - and presumably beginnng with a "C"? But I'm not all that familiar with Staffordshire place names, so am struggling to pin it down.

Any help or suggestions anyone can offer will be gratefully received.

I think that upward stroke is just to separate the previous entry from the word ("over"? ) that was inserted later.

The inserted word is near (not 'over').
I believe the place-name is written Creetton. Afraid I can't help with its location.

Many thanks to ShaunJ and Bookbox for your replies and helpful comments.

You have more or less confirmed my thoughts on this matter - now all I need to do is track down where Creetton (or wherever) actually is!

Thank you once again.
David

The above entry fromm freereg confirms that he was from 'near Creetton'. However the only Creeton I can find is in Lincolnshire

Have you checked FindMyPast for the 1799 will of "George Wood of the Liberty of Creighton in the Parish of Uttoxeter"?

Creighton is 2 miles south east of Croxden.

emeltom & Hanes teulu - thank you both for your very helpful reponses.

I've used Freereg lots, but never thought of using it to double-check a Register entry. A useful lesson learned!

And the George Wood Will is great! I hadn't come across it as yet - but it tells me all I need to know. It gives the correct location/spelling of Creighton - and confirms the names of George's wife, son and grandson - thereby reinforcing my view that he is my 6x Gt Grandfather  :).

All in all, a very successful day's research with the help of ShaunJ, Bookbox, emelton and hanes teulu. Many thanks once again. This just proves what a useful and helpful resource Rootschat is  :)
