There are several instances of the female name 'Christiana' in my wife's tree, and I've encountered males named 'Christian' but never, until now, a female of that name

I hadn't come across any males at all named Christian before the start of civil registration.

Just had a look and in the OPRs the name Christian was recorded for 96 males and 51,162 females before 1855.

From 1855 onwards, there are 2216 males and 8383 females whose given names include Christian. So there was a pretty radical shift over time.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I do like the male forename of Christian very much.

On the opposite side of the coin, ages ago - I came across 2 Civil Registration births (no idea now how I came across them - but they were as follows;)

1878 Q/E Jun in London --- Murder John Smith

1884 Q/E Sep in Alnwick ---Murder Donald McKinley

I imagine the names should have been 'Murdo'.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.
