His father was another William, born 1821, died 1887, who married a Mary Tonks.

Perhaps it is too early in the morning here, but I cannot see the evidence for this marriage?

Acting as a devil’s advocate here

Back to William the gold engraver in 1881 (who we know cannot be William Lindon because he (W.L.) was in India)

Could he be the 1884 registry office marriage to Emma Snape?
In 1891 he is a jeweller (gold)
In 1901 he is a jeweller & engraver

Some of their children are

William James born 19 Sept 1885. Baptism . Father is an engraver.  bk41 Prescott Street
Lily 1887
Lawrence born  5 April 1889. At his baptism father is an engraver
Emma M 1893
Leonard 1897

In 1891 Mary Sanders/Saunders and the sisters Priscilla etc are at either 40 or 41 (it’s not clear on the image) Prescott Street.

His job is now an angle iron straightener, which begs the question: why put an angle into a piece of iron in the first place, if you're going to straighten it out later?

You made me choke on my coffee  ;D

His father was another William, born 1821, died 1887, who married a Mary Tonks.

The male in this couple was Joseph SA(U)NDERS, not William.  Mary Ann TONKS was previously married to Benjamin PHILLIPS and then married Joseph in 1855.  Their son William was born in 1860.

SANDERS, WILLIAM
Mother's maiden surname: TONKS
GRO Reference: 1860  M Quarter in ASTON  Volume 06D  Page 281

William Saunders age 29 bachelor, waggon fitter - 214 Icknield ?? road, father William Saunders, brewer
Kate Powell age 23 spinster, 211 Icknield ?? road, father William Powell, clerk.
both bride and groom signed (He definitely signed Saunders)
witnesses: Henry Ovens and E??? Ovens

I think this is Kate's sister Alice who married Jacob Henry OVENS in 1881.

I think Joseph Sanders was the father of the William Sanders (Saunders) born in 1821. Joseph was born 1805, I believe, and only lived for 40 years.

In 1855, a Mary Ann Phillips, Widow, (father's name Tonks) married a Joseph Sanders, whose father was also a Joseph Sanders. Joseph is listed as 24 (Mary 28) - all these people with the same or similar names are very confusing. So, was William really Joseph?

A little levity appreciated, but maybe iron straightening was re-using scrap iron?
If William Lindon was in India (which makes sense) why did my family have his discharge note?
I'll keep plodding through and try to make sense of it all.
