Doesn't help with his parents' names, however - of possible interest, from the NSW BDM index:

Children of John and Jane PIPER (these are probably baptisms rather than birth registrations, as pre 1856):
1842  Elizabeth (Wesleyan Methodist, Sydney)
1844  William (Wesleyan Methodist, Wollongong)
1847  John (Wesleyan Methodist, Wollongong)
1849  Jane (Wesleyan Methodist, Camden)

Children of James and Martha PIPER:
1843  Caroline (C of E, Illawarra, Jervis Bay)
1843  William (C of E, Illawarra, Jervis Bay)
1843  James (C of E, Illawarra, Jervis Bay)
1844  John (Wesleyan Methodist, Wollongong)
1847  Elizabeth (Wesleyan Methodist, Wollongong)
1848  George (Wesleyan Methodist, Wollongong)

It is possible that Martha PIPER married Matthew BROWNE in 1849 at Wollongong after James' death.  However, BROWN(E) is a rather common name and lots of deaths on the index for "Martha BROWN(E)". Do you know her parents' names?

I think the Australian National Library - and trove - are offline tonight for maintenance, so can't check any mentions of the families at the moment.

Thank you again Maddy.

I am afraid that I know nothing about Martha.
Annoyingly there only appears to be a listing for the Westminster in 1838, other ships around that time have separate sheets for each adult passenger

Just mentioning that I have found on familysearch
Australia, New South Wales, Index to Bounty Immigrants, 1828-1842 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1542665

I have found that I can search it without putting in a name but just a place.   I have spotted some relations of John Piper bn Chatham  including a sister  :)

I have found the sister in Dapto  :)

I suspect with the family moving from Chatham to Ewhurst around the time James was born that James is probably a son Of John Piper and Elizabeth Waight but maybe not baptised.  Hopefully a DNA test will confirm that.

Thank you for looking for me Maddy  :)

Thank you Wivenhoe  :)

I saw the 3 Piper baptisms the other day and decided that the Caroline who ShaunJ found the birth in the UK was the same person as the 'Catherine' that travelled to Australia.  The birth date on the baptism confirms that.  I have no idea who the Ewers family are though, I will have to investigate.

Thank you, I now have the census you have mentioned.  I currently have limited non UK access  ;D

The term "Marshall Mount" refers to the abode of the parents, so it seems likely that the Ewers and Piper families were not related.

Marshall Mount is now a suburb of Wollongong but was a large property in the 1830s and later - this quote from Wikipedia
In 1829 Henry Osborne, a wealthy Irish immigrant, was granted 2,560 acres (10.4 km2) in the Dapto district known as Marshall Mount, where he settled with his wife Sarah Osborne (née Marshall) in 1833. By the 1840s Henry had added to his estate by securing Charles Throsby Smith's "Calderwood" 1,280 acres (5.2 km2), Elyard's "Avondale", William Browne's "Athanlin" (Yallah), Brook's "Exmouth" and numerous smaller grants. Marshall Mount was expanded to reach from Mullet Creek in the north to the Macquarie Rivulet in the south.

I see that occupation given on the baptism for Edward Ewers' father is "Overseer to H. Osborne, Esq"
DYER - Wilts, London, Somerset, MIDLANE - Hants, Wilts, SONE - Hants, WRIGHT - London, Hants, SEAGER - Deptford, DWYER, FERGUSON - Victoria, MASON - Woodford Vic, BALLARD - South Wales, GOULDBY - Lowestoft
