O'NEILL surname
« on: Thursday 28 November 24 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello.
I'm trying to help a friend locate their great grandfather.

The only information I have is:
John E O'Neill born 16th August 1908
Married Winifred Ethel Thompson in 1939 Coventry, Warwickshire.
Their daughter is: Margaret O'Neill born 1943 Coventry.

All the family know is that John came over to England from Ireland and they have no idea where he was born.
I have found John after his marriage, just not before. Thank you

Do they have the 1939 marriage registration, which will give his father's name and occupation?
Will need this to proceed and confirm potential matches.

At least 45, maybe more John O'Neill births were registered in Ireland in 1908. None of those that immediately pop up seem to have the birthdate specified by OP (16/Aug/1908)  - OP could go through one by one looking at  birthdates. Even if a match is found, name of father will be needed to fully confirm.

Is the daughter deceased? We are not allowed to post the names of living people on Rootschat.
I don’t see a birth of that name in Coventry though in 1943.
There is a female birth in Coventry and one of the name you have in Warwick.
Were there any other children born to your couple?

The only John E. O'Neill's birth I can see, is a John Edward O'Neill born Q/E Sept 1908 in Castletown Registration District.

Oddly this isn't showing on the Irish Genealogy site - but is on the Civil Registration Index for Ireland on Ancestry.

However - as has been said - obtaining John's marriage certificate would be needed really, to confirm his father's name.

That birth is on Irish Genealogy

Not born 16th August. I would not put much weight on the initial. Often a confirmation name.

Great find. Wexflyer - I was looking in the Civil Records on the Irish Genealogy site.

Interesting that the record you found appears to be a copy certificate - with a different birth date - but is in the Church Records. Have I understood that correctly? I have never seen an entry like that before in the Church records.

It is a civil birth registration. It is just that all the actual images are made available with a URL address which includes "churchrecords". It isn't, they were just lazy in setting up their file structure.
