Cornelius Birch Hereford help

Hi everyone.

I am looking for parents of Cornelius William Birch born 1817 - 1819 Herefordshire.

He was married to Caroline Williams and Mary Lewis nee Williams.

His father is listed as William Birch on the marriage between him and Caroline.

In the 1850's his mother is listed in a newspaper as Elizabeth Jones who was living in Abergavenny.

I am interested to see if he has any
siblings at all to see how they lived their lives. As Cornelius seemed to have been quite troubled to say the least.

Any help would be appreciated I am completely stuck.

Not Hereford, however there is a Cornelius Brandrick BIRCH baptised 1819 at Checkley, Staffordshre (abode Hollington) - mother Elizabeth. A note says he was base born, mother a servant.

There are other BIRCH entries with abode Hollington eg
Elizabeth BIRCH bap 1799, parents Cornelius and Ann.
Ann BIRCH burial 1817 aged 62, wife of Cornelius.
Cornelius BIRCH buried  1820 aged 77, a widower.

I will have a look into this. The earliest I have any record of him is 1851 after this I have a lot of information. He never seems to have any family around him. His son also changed his name from Charles Birch to his mother's maiden name Williams.

I appreciate your help and I will research the above name see if I can find any more details which would be amazing Cornelius doesn't seem to be an overly common name for that time I'm hoping there is a link.

Is he William BIRCH on the 1871 census - with wife Mary and son Charles? I see that he has his place of birth as "unknown".

Yes Mary was his second wife. He is lodging with her in 1861 she is listed as Mary Lewis and in 1851 lodging with Caroline Williams

I can see a transcription for a marriage of Elizabeth BIRCH and Charles JONES at Checkley (Staffordshire) on 19 Nov 1827. A coincidence?

1851 likely the Elizabeth Jones, born c 1803 Hellington, Staffordshire, Widow, Housekeeper.
Living in Abergavenny.
1861 born c 1796 Hollington, Staffordshire

Not sure if right couple but bapts; St Mary, Abergavenny

Hi,

I cannot thank you both enough, I have been looking for about 2 years for his family. I'm going to go and look into this and update you. This sounds promising.

Cornelius son Charles was my gt gt grandfather he seems to have had a really tough time and died in his 50's partly due to alcohol.

Cornelius also had an alcohol issue and many more problems and was in trouble with the law a lot and apparently had a "bad character" he seemed quite disturbed.

Thank you sooo much for all of your help.

This looks like it adds up to me which is amazing.

I do wonder why Cornelius called himself William but everything seems to align.

I have looked at his siblings and Charles Jones.

I found a few which I thought added up but then found they were incorrect which is a shame. Jones being such a common name is quite difficult.

I will continue down the Staffordshire line for now.
