1841 Census. Address in Blackburn, Lancashire
« on: Monday 07 April 25 19:03 BST (UK) »
I am hoping someone can figure out the strange address on the 1841 Census in an area called Little Harwood, Blackburn, Lancashire.

It looks like, and has been transcribed by Find My Past as 'Feather Bed'!! Surely not.

Unfortunately it is between 2 individually named houses - so no clues there. HO107/504/3.

I would be really grateful for someone else's opinion.

Many thanks.

It's much clearer in the 1851 census, when the same family is still there (Esther Cook as the head): "Feather Bed".

Thank you SO much to both of you.

I am ashamed - I know about the wonderful Cotton Town website, but it didn't cross my tiny mind to check on there.

Also I should have thought to look at the 1851 census.

I am hanging my head in shame.

My most grateful thanks to you both! (Imagine living at somewhere called Feather Bed. It must have been comfy!

Oh Maddy,

You clever soul. Thank you SO very much - I have snipped this part of the map to include it in the Family History write up, I am doing for a neighbour.

It's an unbelievable name isn't it - that's why I thought I was mis-reading it!

Just thought I would let you kind and clever Rootschatters know, that I obtained the digital death certificate for the man living at this strange address.

I was really hoping it would simply give the place of death as 'Feather Bed'! I would have found that so funny.

Unfortunately though, the Registrar was more specific and had written 'Feather Bed, Little Harwood'.
