Thank you, wivenhoe  :)

The 1844 marriage between Robert PHILLIPS and Elizabeth BRINE is Samuel's son who appears on the 1841 census. Elizabeth BRINE is the daughter of Bernard BRINE (Bryan) and Margaret/Margery

Elizabeth PHILLIPS, mother, who registers the birth, 1848, is not literate.

Where Robert PHILLIPS, married 1844, signs his name, you might expect that children/grandchildren of Samuel PHILLIPS would be literate?.

That's a well observed point. Thank you.

I've come across this with Samuel's brother, John PHILLIPS.

John's sons were literate, but his daughters were not.

Sadly, education wasn't considered as important for daughters as it was for sons.
