I've tried to locate hospitals in Derbyshire around 1850. The Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Royal Hospital at Calow was only founded in 1855.
so as far as I can tell, the only possibility I can find is currently called the  Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, previously called the Derbyshire General Infirmary (1810 - 1890). This hospital is in Derby - some 30-40 miles away.
It seems unlikely that an accident around 1850 in Calow would result in people being transported to this hospital.

Anyone got any other ideas ?

Thanks
Bev

Yeh!
I've gone through everything I can think of and can find absolutely nothing, There was a railway accident at Tapton in 1851 that killed and injured several people - but I cant find any thing that would help.
If as is possible it was only a minor accident we may never find anything, and there were so many mines in the area that to find which one a ten year old boy worked at could be a very difficult task indeed. However don't give up, and in the meantime if I find anything that may relate I shall let you know.
By the way I must thank you for the link - I thought I had seen any mining site worth looking at but that one is absolutely fantastic, one that is a certain for my list.
                                                   All the best

Hi Bev
Was your G. Grandfather Joseph Sharman?, was his Father Benjamin Sharman and
mother Elizabeth?

Benjamin & Elizabeth are in Calow in 1861 with Joseph & other Children.
By 1871 this Joseph appears to be in Little Bolton, with wife Mary Ann born Flintshire
Will supply all details if this is yours.

If this is your family, then the important fact is they were Iron Stone Miners
There is an interesting item  on Calow, google search "Notes on the History of Calow"
Sorry I cannot give the www. address for some reason it does not work.

Thanks Spendlove - this is indeed my g.grandfather.
I have the 1861 & 1871 census details but thanks for the offer.

I have found the Notes on the History of Calow that you mention - when I tried to follow the link on Google I got a French error message - but Google could show me the page from its cache ! Clever stuff.

Having been away I haven't had chance to read it properly but it does look interesting - I spotted the map references for mines in the area - I'll have to brush up on my geography skills (Tricky for us women ) !!!

The article also makes reference to Duckmanton lodge - I know from my research there was a Sharman at Duckmanton Lodge in 1841 but I haven't yet proved a relationship with my ancestors.

Thank for your help,
Bev
