Artillery Hats
I wore one like that in the Glosters. The way they are shaped just fitted you head. and they stayed on. No water needed not like the beret to get the shape.

Apart from my Dad in the photos wearing them, my mother used to make them in the thousands, as well as other bits of uniforms

Not very interesting to others but they didn't make themselves, and all part of the war effort
