Hello Patrick,

What denomination was the McGowan family? Were they  members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or Presbyterians?

You may have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Patrick,

Griffiths Valuation extracts show that McGowan families were in the counties on the list below when the Valuations took place. Your ancestors move to Scotland indicates they were probably living in Ulster rather than in one of the other provinces.

Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Derry, Donegal, Down, Dublin, Fermanagh, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, Tyrone, Westmeath, Wicklow
