Mystery regarding REA and ship to the crimea
« on: Monday 19 September 05 09:35 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for information about Christopher George Rea b:25/04/1824 Penrith), who I believe may have been on a ship "Europa" as an emigrant in 1855 when the ship was mutinied.

Our family history suggests that he "jumped ship" as he ended up in Victoria Australia and we have been unamble to find any trace of how he landed there.

It is also possible that he may have been onboard not to emigrate but rather on his way to the Crimean war (possibly 90th Regiment).

All very vague I'm sure but I would love some clues as to how to find a record of this ship and who embarked and disembarked.  It is possible there is more than one ship of the same name in the same time frame.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Kirsten,
The above website address only seems to suggest that there may be a few years unaccounted for ie..this 'Europa' was launched in 1867, obviously a few years after Christopher George Rea and his possible 'jumping ship', it may not even be the same one.  I'm not too hot on naval accounting I'm afraid.

I hope you are able to come to a satisfactory conclusion in your research...best of luck.

Kirsten......I think this is it.  Read the history about it at the bottom...very interesting stuff.  If you know all this please accept my apogies.  In any event I'll twiddle with a few search engines and see what comes up. :)
