Brigham&Co/James Redpath
« on: Monday 19 September 05 09:37 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find out about a company called Brigham&Co, Berwick, Northumberland around late 1800`s and if my GGrandfather, James (Ogle) Redpath, served an apprenticeship with them?
He was an electrician in later years.

I have no firm birthdate or place of birth for James Redpath ,so placing him at a time in this firm will help.

He was born circa 1868-1872!
If anyone finds the birth date for James Redpath, parents John and Mary Ann Craig I would be thrilled. He had a Newcastle and Glasgow connection.
2 years of searching Scottish and English records have left me none the wiser!!!!

Help please!
Sinclair

Hi Sinclair

Why don't you let us have the details of what you know about James Redpath - the more info we have the better the chance of helping you.

eg Marriage date and place ?
     Any Census entries ?
Where your info re parents and birthdate came from ?

We want to help, but need a bit more to work with.

Thanks Helen,
I am very grateful.

The following info came from the 1893 marriage in Glasgow of James Ogle Redpath born ??1868-1872 .

James Ogle Redpath, parents John Redpath, shipbroker, and Mary Ann Craig. (can find no traces of their marriage)
He gave his age as 25 (birth 1868)

He fought in the Boer War 1899-1902 and I have his records. He gave his birth place as Kelvin,Glasgow Lanark. No record of this on Scottish records. I always understood he was English. It is here that he states he is an electrician and that he served a 4 year apprenticeship with Brigham & Co Berwick. Age given, 29 (birth 1872)

His wife Helen and son William born 1898 in Newcastle appear in the1901 Census at 69 Barrington St.Newcastle. James was at war.

Somewhere Helen and Joseph had a son Joseph Ogle Redpath and his birth was in 1906.He died age 33 in 1939 as stated on his death certificate.
This is another mystery as I can find no trace of his birth certificate either. Over a 2 year period I have searched Scottish and English Records around 1906.

James died in Glasgow on Oct.6  1946 and the given age was 76 (birth 1870) .

I do hope you have better luck than me and I live in hope !
Good Luck, Sinclair

Hi

The above 1871 Census entry is interesting - I've looked at the original page and John Redpath was a Ship Broker.

The address was High Greenses, Berwick.

All residents are recorded as being born in Berwick.

There are three children:
William aged 5
Mary Taylor aged 3
Ogle Wait aged 5m

By 1881 these 3 children are living with Grandparents William and Margaret Redpath in Berwick and no sign of their parents or your James.

One way to go would be to check if these children have the same parents as your James.

The birth of Ogle Wait Redpath was registered in the Dec quarter 1870 at Berwick 10b 356

You can apply to Berwick Register Office (if you are in the UK) and ask them to issue the birth Certificate for Ogle only if the parent's names are John Redpath and Mary Ann Craig.

Just an idea - what do you think ?

I've also found the Mary Ann Redpath and daughter Mary Taylor Redpath from the 1871 Census in the 1891 Census in Berwick.

Mary Ann is recorded as married, so husband John may be working away as they both may have been in 1881 leaving the 3 children with the Grandparents.

Could you look at the 1891 please :)

RG12/4229/9/11
I found Ogle living with William Redpath although he is listed as a cousin the dates match William the brother living with the grandparents in 1881. I couldn't be too sure what Ogles occupation was, thought it may be printer but on checking I am not too sure. Would appreciate someone else's opinion.

I have looked at the 1891 and it is a toss-up between "Painter" and "Printer".

I am beginning to think James Ogle Redpath is the same as Ogle Wait Redpath and he just didn't like the name. He seems to have told a fair number of different stories about his age!
