1932 suicide in Manchester
« on: Tuesday 20 September 05 13:45 BST (UK) »
John William Buswell commited suicide by coal gas poisoning 23 April 1932 while living at 66 Great Cheetham Street Higher Broughton.  I was wondering if someone who has access to local newspaper records of that period could check whether anything was recorded.

He was politically active in the Labour Party and Co-op and moved to Manchester between 1915 and 1920.  I am particularly interested in his political activities which it is believed led to his unemployment, the move to Manchester from Wellingborough in Northants, and his eventual suicide

Hi there,

Just a thought...but have you checked whether a Coroner's Court Inquest was held?

There might still be some records available if one was held.

Best Wishes, Romilly.

I must admit I haven't tried very hard to find an inquest as it is unlikely to tell me much more than I already know.  Can anyone advise please as to which local newspapers I should be seeking.

Hi David,

You could try;

Manchester Archives & Local Studies
Central Library
St. Peters Square
Manchester
M2 5PD

email  archiveslocalstudies [at] manchester.gov.uk

They have microfilmed copies of Salford City Reporter covering the date you are interested in.
This would be the most likely paper as John William lived in Salford

Good Luck
Regards, Dave

Hi David,

If you have had no luck it may be worth you trying Salford Local History Department as they would cover this area.

Thank you Dave and Sarah.  I will pick up your suggestions in the New Year.  Unfortunately at the minute I have a major family panic which will keep me occupied for the next few weeks.

Hi David,

two other sources you may wish to use are:

1. The Peoples History Museum
    103 Princess Street
     Manchester M1 6DD           tel 0161288 7212

they hold archives for  Co Operative Movement and may be able to help.

2. The Working Class Movement Library

    51 The Crescent
    Salford
    M54WX   tel 01617363601

This holds all sorts of material including Labour party Archives. A very important source of materials which may struggle to survive because the council is unable to sustain it's sponsership. I would urge any one reading this to consider a donation to this archive because of the quality of its material.

Hope this helps,

Heather
