John Gouck? Tenant of Wardmill, Arbroath around 1720-1790 - I'm stuck

I have an old family note written by my Grandfather? that reads:
-----------------
John Gouack tenant of Wardmill, Arbroath, Scotland
married Ann Kiddle May 11th 1761
|
John Gouk tenant of Batshead Mill, Plymouth, Devon
married Anne Lee
|
<plus details on the next two generations>
---------------------------------

My research has confirmed the following:
John Gouk at Plymouth was a tenant of Budshead Mill (correct spelling)
and got married to Ann Lee in 1790 at Plymouth

Also the details for the next two generations were correct so I have good faith in this note (spelling variations accepted).

Gouack is probably a wrong spelling but I can't find any links with Wardmill or any movement from Arbroath to Plymouth.

The best fit is:
John Gouck b 1759 St Vigeans (the main church in Arbroath)
parents John Gouck and Ann Shipherd

but Shipherd and Kiddle are just too different for me to believe it.

I'm so stuck
