Mary Ann Macfarlane
« on: Tuesday 20 September 05 20:23 BST (UK) »
Where have they gone!!

My G Grandmother was married to William Macfarlane and they lived in Arbroath, Forfar.  Her maiden name is Crockett

William died young at the age of 38 leaving Mary with 4 children aged from 10, 7, 6 and 4 at the time of his death in 1883.

William's brother John was mentioned on the death cert.

I have now lost them all, no mention of John, Mary or the children anywhere.  I next find my Grandmother in Glasgow when she married William Peter Sinclair.

I have thought of the Poor House, but as have only just started out on this, dont know how to find where they might have gone.

Any ideas?

Hi AniMac,
Have you got the death of Mary?
That might give you another clue to where the kids are, or, do the kids have a strange first name to try and trace their marriages, or deaths, :D

Hy AniMac, what year did Mary marry William Sinclair? If it's not long after she was widowed then she would most likely have had the children with her. Have you tried looking for a marriage certificate for any of them, I would and use an average age of 18 to 30. Have you tried looking on the 1891 and 1901 census for any of them? Try death certificates, it's all a bit of a wild card but worth a try. Here's the web address of the poor house for arbroath, maybe you can find a link that would enable you to further your research.
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Arbroath/Arbroath.shtmlI would look at the previous options first.

Hi Kenjo and GEN10

Thank you both SO much for this info.  Just to clear the confusion! (my fault)

William Macfarlane
(not MacF or McF) was born abt 1855.  He was a Commercial Traveller and died (found dead !) on 7/3/1893
Married Mary Ann Crockett - 12/4/1882 - 20 Mill Gate. Arbroath, Forfar (got that from a Cert)

They had 4 children:-
Margaret Crawford Macfarlane - My Grandmother - born 28/4/1883 Kefety Street, St Vigeans
Mary Macfarlane born abt 1886
Annie ? M Macfarlane born abt 1887
William Macfarlane born abt 1889

I still have work to do on the children.

My problem was/is I lost the family after William (senior) died which was 3 years after son William was born.  As his brother John was the witness on the death cert. I am assuming they may have gone to live with him, BUT can't find John, Mary Ann or rest of children.

Have searched for all of them on the 1901 census but nothing. So though perhaps they went to a poor house.

The next time I locate Grandmother was when she married in Glasgow and on the Cert is supposed to have lived at 22 Armetta??!! St, Glasgow

I must learn to put my questions more clearly (only just started doing this!!) and realise when each family repeats the Christian name it gets confusing.  Wern't very innovative in those days were they!

No did not have Mary Ann's death.

Yes her daughter Maragret Crawford married William Sinclair, and from there my father was William Douglas Sinclair.

Am adding all your lovely info into the data base now - slowly!

Thanks
Annie
