Christina Barr - HELP
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 10:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a problem with Christina Barr. All we know is that she married James Duff 4 July 1873 at Cumbraes. From her age she appears to have been born c 1850-51 and her parents are lsited as William Duff and Elizabeth Littlejohn (or Elizabeth Gray) but I can find no record of them or where Christina was born. I have not even been able to trace her in the 1871 census.

Christina and James emigrated to New Zealand around 1874.

Can anyone help fill the gaps???

Hi Joe

thanks for this. the latest thought (from the census)  is that Christina was born in Partick in Lanarkshire but nothing is confirmed yet so I am grateful for all possibilities.

thanks again

Hi Carawa

Apart from the entries that show on IGI as posted by Joe, there is this family showing in the 1861 census and as you say this Christina shows as born in Partick:

Willm Barr    53, Tinsmith & Gasfetter, b. Kilbarchan, Renfrew
Elizath Barr    48, b. Banff
Willm Barr    25, Tinsmith & Gasfetter, b. Greenock
Helen Barr    13, b. Partick
Elizth Barr    11, b. Partick
Christina Barr    9, b. Partick

Address: 17 Cathcart Street, Greenock

Probably a good way forward would be to establish what father William's occupation was from Christina and James Duff's marriage cert. in 1873. Have you viewed the image for confirmation?

Regards.

Hi Monica

I am pretty sure that this is the right family as the occupation of William is the same as on Christina's marriage certificate. I have been unable to locate either Christina's birth or William and Elizabeth's marriage. Perhaps they weren't recorded. We have had two different names for Christina's mother. her marriage certificate says Elizabeth Littlejohn but else where we have Elizabeth Gray and this Gray name was carried down for one of Christina's children so who knows?

Regards

found this pal

william barr married elizabeth gray 26/2/1832 east parish, greenock.

there is a few possibilities for the father of wiliam in kilbarchan, but on a hunch, i am going with this one....

william, born 24/1/1808 kilbarchan, son of robert and helen thomson.

does william make it to the 1861 census?

if so you can view his death and we can get his parents details also.

Hi

Thanks for your help. have found William Barr's death certificate and his parents were Robert Barr and Helen Thomson. So I now have his birth as well. What wonderful people you are. Now I need to work on Elizabeth Barr nee Gray and get her death certificate to try and track her parents.

Thanks again everyone

I would consider the possibility that mother Elizabeth may also have left for NZ with daughter Christina and new family. With William Barr's death in 1876, maybe they all emigrated. Cannot find a likely death for Elizabeth as yet...let me know if you do! There is no entry for an El* Barr born Banff any age on the SP 1881 Census index.
