Hi Carole,

Here are a few places to start looking:

1881 Canadian Census and 1880 US Census (transcription) http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

1901 Canadian Census http://automatedgenealogy.com (Transcribed index with links to original images)

(1891 not on-line)

Let us know if you find him and someone can probably point to some more resources depending on where he was living.  (BMDs and most other resources are different for each province).  Do you know anything else about him?  Was he single when he came over?  How do you know (or suspect) it was Toronto?

Hope you find him...

Martha

Thanks for those suggestions, I appreciate that. For the 1881 census, he was still in Britain, and working as a shipping clerk in Lancashire, close by to some of his brothers who were marine engineers, and single. He doesn't re-appear in any of the British censuses nor can I find a death registration.

However, there is a couple of entries of a likely character on the Ellis Island site, after 1901, where it states that tho this man is Canadian and living in Toronto, he was born in England. He isn't on the 1901 Canadian census that I can see.

So the Canadian link is entirely speculative at this point and fuelled by wild guesswork - perhaps worth a shot?

Carole

I found this fellow with a family in 1901...Maybe check the 1911
and see if he says the same age....This wife was older so he could have
fibbed to be closer to her age....( reaching a little more, but it happens)

Adamson Wm H    M  Head  M    Oct  4    1858    43

ON    YORK (West/Ouest)    Etobicoke    a-2    5    37

added..both census also say he was born Ontario so likely rules this one out

Thanks for those two suggestions - if there is a Canadian link for this man, all the pointers seem to lead to Ontario/Totonto, so I will bear the info in mind. I haven't yet found his birth reg to find an exact age - some of the records are obscured.

Really appreciate you looking on my behalf.

I am pretty sure that York is a section of Toronto...so that is why I gave you
that one....Someone in Ontario will let you know for sure when they see this...
I added the word Toronto to the topic for when it comes up in the thread...
Not sure if that works or not, so will find out....TommyToronto & others will see it
and they are really good....
Also uh sorry, I see that he would be years "younger" not "older". Sometimes
I look at my posts and say what was I thinking????  J.J.

Didn't work, so you will have to try changing the word Canada to Toronto (modify to change subject line in initial posting) to catch someone's eye...J.J.

The city of Etobicoke (EE-toe-bih-coe) used to be outside of the city of Toronto.  It became part of the city of Toronto during an amalgamation a few years ago.

Here is some information about the City of York:
http://www.toronto.ca/archives/records_york.htm

Here is the York County, Ontario GenWeb site:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~onyork/york.html

Hope that helps.
