Just to follow up on my earlier post:
"Aunt Miranda who went to America"!
Last year I was googling some of the names of Miranda's descendants and found an obituary to her granddaughter who died in Aug 05.  I further googled the names of the deceased's nephews, found an email address for one but got no answer.  A few days ago I googled another nephew, found him on Rootsweb, and made contact with him - he's Miranda's great-grandson!  Am eagerly waiting to hear more from him now.
The power of Google!

I found a 4th cousin by googling a surname and the place where they lived and up popped a result from Rootsweb.  We both helped eachother get further back.

When I first started my family research I googled and found an American website with their family research on it.  We do have a common name in our research but as yet (2 years later!) I still can't quite get the connection!

My G Grandfather Edwin Wanklyn was living/working with Mary Moulds (nee Wanklyn) and it is Mary that the Americans have on their tree (all from Herefordshire).

Just a little word of warning though - I have found quite a few incorrect entries on their tree - I know they are wrong because I have checked the details at Hereford records office.  So if I do link up our trees, I will certainly check out their research myself.

Herefordshire - Wanklyn (all variations)
Herefordshire - Preece
Gloucestershire - Bayliss
Gloucestershire - Creese
Gloucestershire - Johnson
Gloucestershire - Emerson

Just wanted to chime in. I have found some wonderful connections through googling. I found much of my grandfather's family, which was the most exciting, most recently my mom's second cousins. I have also found web sites taking a couple of my branches back to the 1500s, and some great contacts to boot. Keep googling, it is worth it.  :D :D :D

And not only Google!

Have found the BBC search engine often brings up sites that I don't see on Google.

This is a quote from last year ... (just seen this thread)

Quote
a Nude Gallery website (apparently she's the hottest nude pinup on the web) - no I did'nt take a peek

... but it put me in mind of what happened to my son when he was about 14 in a computer class at school ...

He had been signed up for a Hotmail account (who's guessed it already ?!) and he typed HOTMALE by mistake ... and guess what he got !  Yup, a Hot Male !  He saw the teacher coming, and in a panic didnt know what to do, so pulled the plug out and crashed every computer in the school !!

I asked him if he's tried HOT FEMALE ... you should have seen his blush, poor boy !

(I wonder if he has yet; he's now 25 !)

Oh Lydart - how embarrassing - I do hope you bring this up when chatting to his girlfriends  :D ;D ;) :)

Yes, I agree we should all keep searching the web.  I used to search a lot but then got a bit fed up and thought well if they want me then they can find me, which isn't the attitude to take as the net just gets bigger.  It's amazing how much 'stuff' is out there now compared to just three years ago,  not only about family names but also info about villages and churchyards etc.
