Waddington Family of Kettlethorpe Hall, Kettlethorpe, Lincs.
« on: Saturday 14 August 04 11:20 BST (UK) »
Hi.
Would anyone please have access to any information on Kettlethorpe Hall?
My WADDINGTON family ancestors lived there approx 1800-1850.
I believe they farmed the land & lived in the Hall.
It is presently owned by Rt. Hon. Douglas Hogg, QC, MP., Viscount Hailsham, & his wife Baroness Hogg of Kettlethorpe.
It was where Katherine Swynford (later wife of John of Gaunt) spent some of her years. It has been rebuilt several times since then, I understand.
Any Waddington family from that area are most welcome to make contact too.
Many thanks.
Simon

I have a James Waddington in my family, from Lincolnshire, marrying Annie LEANING in 1923. They had children Joan Waddington and Kenneth Waddington.

That's about all I know of them so far - do they match anything you have?

Regards - Jonathan Ellis.

a look in google (kettlethorpe hall) brought up 106 hits, including this short description:

Classical Viennese style Hall (c.1727) and associated gardens. Features include: serpentine lake with an interesting boat house. Most of parkland now given over to school playing fields.

Hi Jonathan:
Thanks for your query.
My info on my Waddingtons in Lincs isn't as late as 1923, as my ancestors came here to New Zealand, but I am interested in tracing the lines of their sibling's children.
You don't have anything further on James Waddington's parents do you?
Whereabouts in Lincolnshire?

Hi Bob:
Thanks for those links.
I've trawled through the various search engines for new info on Kettlethorpe Hall.
The first one you mention is actually in Yorkshire, same name, different location, but a very charming boathouse, retaining the medieval facade of Wakefield Chantry Chapel.

The 2nd reference is the one I'm seeking more info about.

Cheers
Simon

I don't know anything about your Waddington family but I did used to visit Kettlethorpe Hall in the 1960s. It was then owned by Judge Daly Lewis and his wife and two daughters Elizabeth and Jane. It is within walking distance of Kettlethorpe Church.
I read the book Katherine by Anya Seton that is about Katherine...mistress of John of Gaunt. It was made all the more interesting because I was able to see the Hall.
No useful information for you but I felt I had to write to let you know that I have at least seen the Hall and have been inside and seen most of it.

Hi Jill

It's great to read that you have visited the Hall.
I agree that your visits would have heightened your interest in the story of Katherine.
How wonderful to have been in the house where she had lived.
Do you recall that it was a large building?
The Church, I understand, is across the road from the Hall?

Hi Julie

Thanks for that link.
I have explored that site before, and gleaned some useful information.
Sadly, I received no reply to emails I sent to the e-address.

Regards to you both.

Hi Simon,

I just happen to live 2 miles down the road from Kettlethorpe Hall.   Do you want me to go and take a couple of pictures for you?

I did actually go inside a few years ago to a "do" the Hoggs were having, but there were so many people there I couldn't have a really good nose round!

If you want some pics. send me a p.m. with your email address and I'll see what I can do.

Hi Simon
I don't remember that Kettlethorpe Hall was big...but it was of course bigger than your average house.
It was of course a long time ago. I have just checked the Kettlethorpe Website listed on these messages and see that 'The Judge' died in 1977. I left that area in 1967 although my mother visited the area a few times since then.
It was your average sized 'Manor'
It is close to the Church and is on the right hand side as you look at the Church from the Church Gate. I don't remember seeing the Church from the Hall so there must be a few trees there.
It seems the other Jill lives close by so she will beable to tell you from fact and not memory.
