I agree with Hackstaple,  The layout of this forum makes searching big lists somewhat difficult.  An alphabetic list of names with birth dates, and then a form of contact to the owner of the name/tree/enquiry would be teriffic.
Check the "Surname Interest Table" at the bottom of most screens to check all my SURNAMES.

SHEPHERD, ALSOP, GIBBS, ANDREWS, GREENWAY, COLBORN - Gloucestershire
KELK, COATES, LEEMAN - Lincolnshire
STANGER, POLLARD, HASLAM, WRIGHT - Surrey
MATTHEWS, POOK, COBBETT - Somerset
BAILEY, COLLINS, McDOWELL - Australia, then who knows where in UK?

The way I see it at present, there is too much spurious information.  Example: I type in Shepherd, every Shepherd in the text is listed, as well as every name and pseudonym of authors who have Shepherd anywhere in the title.
Check the "Surname Interest Table" at the bottom of most screens to check all my SURNAMES.

I would like to see the"one name interests board" restricted to entries which have a broad interest in the name.  It is very frustrating to look at a one name entry only to find that it is actually a reference to two generations of a family in the corner of a specific county.

Surely these entries can be accessed by members listing the names in which they are interested.  I know from talking to people at our local FHS that many of them are not even aware that this facility exists despite the regular advertising.  The problem is that people don't look at the links at the bottom of the page.

What I would like to see is the ability for people link their name interests to the relevant counties from a picklist and then the abilty to retrieve from the name interest lists by name and county.  Somehow we need to obey the basic rule of database building that keys which are frequently used to search should be retrieved from picklists both on input and during searching.

Well now i can see why the SIT table already in use is such a triumph!

It covers most of the objectives we have raised here, while getting around the problems that have also been mentioned.

At this point I am not sure whether to abandon the idea or wait a bit longer for the ideal solution to occur to someone?

Is this really a live issue - or can we make do with what we have got? (Thus saving Bob a lot of work and enabling him to get on with the ironing?)

Those of us who are thick, like me, can find no way of searching SIT even when we remember what it is ???
I am also too syupid to see why a County Surnames Board and a SIT are needed if one does all jobs. If there is a firm need for a County Surnames Board then it should be made as useful as possible. At the moment they are as useful as using a comb to sweep the floor - a lot of effort and no good result ::)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Well, the bad news is this:

There ain't gonna be no County Surname Table on each board !!!

BUT
the good news is this:

I've taken on board your comments and suggestions here, and incorporated them into the SIT.

For each surname you can now enter a county from a drop-down list (picklist) and
You can enter a place name.

Which means you can now search for County and Place name !!

Which means you've got what you wanted  (I think !)

Try it and see !!

Wow Bob!  :o

Just took me 10 minutes or so to do mine.  Looking good and hopefully will make it much clearer who is interested in what and where.

Very well done!!  ;D
