Allans of Saskatchewan, Canada
« on: Monday 26 September 05 21:13 BST (UK) »
Hi guys,

The information that I have is that LESSEL ALLAN went out to a place called Kinola/Kinely, south of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, with his brother WILLIAM and a freind called CHARLES RIOCH. This was about 1910/13.  He joined up in 1916 with the C.E.F. and shipped to England. He returned to Scotland and married an Isabella Mutch they had a had a son, also called LESSEL born 1913. Then in turn they were married in 7/11/1916.

LESSEL survived the war and returned to Tisdale, Canada in 1919 where he was given a quarter of cleared land and a quarter of bush land from the Canadien Government for his military service. ISABELLA did not go that year, but went in 1920 leaving their son LESSEL aged 7 with his grandma.

LESSEL & ISABELLA had other children born, these were ALEXANDER / ALMA / WILLIAM / NORMAN and SHEILA but I have no dates to give you. I do know that ALEXANDER was born in Scotland. This group only knew they had another brother when news of LESSEL had died, reached them in Canada.

If anyone can shed light on these drop me a line

Swally

Here is some information on Camp Hughes, which is where he signed up. ..according to the attestation papers. It also says he was living in Arcola, Saskatchewan when he signed up. Tisdale is also also in Sask. I did find the death of a Lessel Allan in Ohio...so the name isn't entirely uncommon!
 :D
Unusual to have taken one son with them, but left another in Scotland...

You have to pay for this service, but if it is worth your while,

The town of Tisdale is online...try writing for more information...
It's a small town and friendly, maybe someone will help you if you have
some concrete questions for them. http://www.townoftisdale.com/
While you're at it, let them know they should hide their email address
to avoid spamming

Thanks for the info,

I beleive the reason they left one son behind is-

his future wife was pregnant before he left for Canada, he returned 3 years later after he had joined up with the C.E.F and married Issabella.  Then he went to war, on his return they decided to go back to Canada.
Due to having a kid outside wedlock it may have been suggested that the granny bring the child up  (to save the disgrace to the family, and depending on the grans age she could have pretended it was hers). The child may have believed that the Granny was his mother only to be told later in life the facts.

Strange Days........

The interesting fact is that, when he was killed in action during WW2 it gives his parents as Lessel and Isabella and them staying in Scotland.
Which I believe to be untrue as we cannot find a death of a Lessel uptil 1954 anywhere in Scotland apart from the one who lost his life during the war.

Lessel Allan is a very rare name......well in Scotland anyway.  I beleive there was only 4 over a 60 odd year period and 3 of them are related to me

Thanks very much for your help, if you can shed any further info on this particular subject feel free.

Kind regards,

Swally

Couldn't find your original town....I used to live in Saskatchewn , but  not
familiar to me...perhaps the town was Kendal...or Arcola? My husband used
to survey all through Southern Sask. I'll see if he knows a town by those
names or near to the sound...J.J.

Well it costs you to do this, but you would know if he was still
in Tisdale with these records from 1940 plus..

Still say that it couldn't hurt to try contacting Tisdale, as small town
people can be very obliging if you get the right person on the right day!
Give it a shot...no harm in trying. You either get an answer, or you don't!

Yes!  There really is a Kinley, not that it really helps, at this stage, I guess,
It is a village...(not big enough to be a town) Southwest of Saskatoon.

Have you heard anything from Tisdale?

I found this on the internet and it reminded me of your search...as I had sent
you a link to a "Camp Hughes" site in Manioba....( now a defunct site, unfortunatley)
but I found this one, and it says that "camp hughes"  was in Ontario...
http://scaa.usask.ca/gallery/war/training.html

wondering if there were 2 of them...?
Never mind, I just found a site that says there was one in Saskatchewan,
also...so now wondering even more

I just reread your thread, here, and was wondering if you had seen Lessel's attestation papers? I think I had assumed that you had.

Just in case...
