I am researching Aitken family of Listonshiels also. One member, son of James Aitken, went to Australia.....  would there be anything in your Peeblesshire History regarding James or any of the sons? Or any family members in the local churchyard?

Hi Phillippa

I have a list of all the pre-1855 headstones in the old Newlands Churchyard.  There are two headstones with the name Aitken:

1.  Wm Nimmo Aitken d 8.4.1844  9

2. James Aitken of Callands 30.5.1835  87, w Margt Murray 1.8.1839  91, s James A of Callands 16.6.1839  63 (w Agnes Nimmo 12.11.1851  72, da Margt Murray 22.6.1844  25)

There is also a reference to the History of Peeblesshire Vol 3 p88 in my records.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Evelyn

Mrs a, not sure how to contact you other than through this post as I am new to RootsChat.  I note that you have a book re history of Peebleshire.  I'm researching Marion Sanderson/Alexander Cuthbertson.  Marion was born around 1765 and her brothers and sisters were Thomas 1761, Isobel 1768, William 1770, Alexander 1773, Rachel 1775 and Agnes 1781.  I have a copy of Thomas' Will leaving a house that was situated on Ludgate to his brother Alexander.  Thomas had a substantial amount of money and bought the land from Alexander Smibert (Shoemaker) and built a house.  He left large sums of money to his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews and I wondered if there was any mention of the family in the book you had.  Their father, Thomas, was a tenant farmer so not sure where the money came from.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thx.

Hi Bev,

You could try sending mrs a a personal message and I she should be notified of it via her e-mail.

Good luck
