I was born near sheffield but i had never heard of this disaster

My "Popular History of Sheffield" (J Edward Vickers) states that

"The result of seven hundred million gallons of water pouring down from Bradfield was that 270 people were drowned, 798 houses were completely destroyed and 4357 were flooded causing damage.  Also lost were 693 animals and 15 Stone Bridges."

I live up the hill rather than down in the dale!

My dad, born in Halifax always used to refer to something rare or unlikely to happen  as "once every Sheffield Flood"  now I know where this came from
