Wales to Brazil??
« on: Friday 30 September 05 10:26 BST (UK) »
My ggrandfather Hugh HUGHES was (b app.1825)in Ruthin and according to the 1881 Liverpool census he  had two daughters born  in BRAZIL South America. In 1852 and 1854.

His wifes name was given as Margaret.b1819 Wales.

I have spent hours searching ships lists trying to trace  how and why Hugh went to live in Brazil at that time albeit only for about 5 years. He was back in Liverpool in 1857.

I would appreciate contact from anyone who has had to go through this type of search as Ive really struck a solid wall now.

Thanks.
June

As Liverpool is a port, is it possible he was a merchant seaman who sailed out of that port and who was accompanied by his wife who happened to be pregnant and go into labour, on two occasions, when in Brazil,or is that stretching credibility too far?.

Have you found him in any censuses prior to/after 1881 and, if so, what is his occupation?. That may give some indication as to the reason he went to Brazil.

Clutching at straws a bit here...........  :)

It may be worth checking immigration into the USA. I have a possible relative who went in and out and somehow ended up with a South American wife

hello all you kind peolpe.

I have Hugh and family on the Liverpool census for 1871 and later. He was a blacksmith by trade.

I will go check the Patagonia site again so thanks for that - but I seem to remember that it may be a bit early in time for my family. However - I will check again.

Thanks

Do you have a good site you could let me have for this. This would be a new avenue for me to try.
