WWII RAF question
« on: Friday 30 September 05 14:55 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if I can find out a person's squadron with only their service number to go on?  I can't really justify spending £££'s to get the records from Innsworth at the moment.

Thanks
Julie

The simple answer I think would be that he would have probably been in several squadrons, therefore you would need his service record. However if yiu knew his job and the stations he served at it may narrow things down a bit.

If you have his full name, service number, and  R A F  that should be  enough information. They will be able to look up that name find the service number, and bingo. He may have been in several squadrons that will show in his records.  Innsworth will have him under RAF
I know that is how things work I was in the Army, (Medical) and worked with all the Services and we alway went by name, number, and force. The number is unique to that person so it should not be to hard

Julie,
was your relative aircrew (did they fly) or were they groundcrew?

If they were flyers, do you know what type of aircraft they flew?

Definitely groundcrew.  All I know is that he was based in North Africa for a large part of the war.

I think I'm going to have to dig deep and order the records.  Unfortunately even though I'm next of kin, I still have to pay £30 as I'm not the widow  :'(

Thanks for your interest
