Feudal Land Tenancy

Through contact with LUV have learned my 3x Great Grandfather was Archibald Herd/Hird.  LUV sent me a copy of his will.    Thank you again LUV!  It states he was a "Feuar". 

Question  -  would there be land records showing how he got this designation and how he inherited his "feu".  Anyone - can you tell me where to look and what questions shud I ask?

He lived at Greystone Terrace in Carnoustie in 1870's.  His death information (1880) does not give his parents' names, but with a name like Archibald may show up on Scotlandspeople without pages of hits.   Thx.  Lauraine
