I had some excellent help on the forum quite some time ago (especially Helen) about my Gallachers and now I need a wee bit more. Hopefully just a pointer in the right direction.

My GG Grandparents Thomas Gallacher and Mary Handlin both lived in Duntocher. Thomas I have marriage certificate (19/04/1858) and death record (04/12/1919). On the death record it make no mention of his wife being deceased - so rightly or wrongly I have assumed that she was still alive in 1919. However no matter how I search for it I just cannot find a death record for Mary.

I have done various searches on Scotland People from 1901 right through to 1950 ??? but can find nothing obvious

I have found them both on the 1911 census at 43 New Street and aged 74 and 70 repectively and also living with their son Thomas.
Any help or advice on what I might be doing wrong or where to look would be appreciated.

Thanks

Gerry

Hi Gerry,
I don't know how much help I'll be this time   :(
I don't have any credits at the moment, but did a basic search of -
Mary Gallacher, mother's maiden name Cougan, born 1840 +/- 5 years, search year range 1919-1920, and came up with 4 results (which, of course I can't look at).
However, that is with no district selected.  The minute I try Dumbarton, Old Kilpatrick, or Lanark there are no results at all.  So, up to you whether you take a look or not.   :-\
Let me know how you go,
Helen

Helen,

Thank you for that but please, please  don't waste any of your credits on the SP site.

I have done quite a few searches probably including those that you mention.

I will try to collate all the information that I currently have and put in on a posting perhaps then yourself or someone else might be able to see something that I am missing.

Thanks again.

Gerry

Helen et al,

I've now managed to find Mary Gallacher on the death register (Nov 1921). The death was registered in Greenock (44 Union Street) although her usual address was given as New Street Duntocher.

Anyway problem solved - for the moment.

Thanks for your help.

Gerry

No worries.

Info on Mary Gallacher (ms Hanlin or Handlin)
Date of death 3rd November 1921  age 79
Parents: John Hanlin, Mary Hanlin (ms Coogan)
Cause of death Senile debility and heart disease
Informant: Thomas Gallacher - son

Place of death: 44 Union Street, Greenock
Usual residence: 41 New Street Duntocher

I did discover that the address in Greenock is a care home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor (a religious order that care for the elderly) and rather spookily my own sister is now one of the nuns of that order.

I've tried attaching a copy of the record (hope that is not illegal) I'm sure a mod can delete it if it is.

Thank you for that Gerry - brilliant!  And thanks for the information on the Greenock address, that's useful to know.
