Look-up Jeremiah Sheehan 1851/61 census

My GGGrandfather escaped the famine in Ireland coming to England from Kilkenny circa 1845. He was a land surveyor named Jeremiah Sheehan. I have details of his son Michael from 1871 censuses onwards but none of Jeremiah or the family in 1851 or 61. They were living at Edgeley Stockport. Any assistance gratefully received. Jim

Hi Su...thanks for that, that could be the family. On Michaels wedding cert. March 3rd 1862 he gives his age as 21 and his profession as engineer (in a cotton mill). His address is Heaton Norris...so that's all pretty close. His father was called Jeremiah so an elder brother of that name follows naming patterns. Now I have to find out where they were in 1851 to see if the elder Jeremiah is alive...and try to trace the younger one's path. Incidentally I see you are interested in Ramsdales in Hindley...the above Michael Sheehan married Alice Ramsdale (my ggrandparents), the Ramsdales came from Warrington. William Ramsdale, a weaver, was born in Hindley in 1816 where his father James originated from. I think I have his (possible) marriage to Anne Hayes on Oct 2 1814, they have a William christened 2 Aug 1815 and a Bridget 2 Nov 1817. Any connections? Thanks again for the info. Jim

I have looked on the 1851 Stockport and found a 'Sheenan' family Headed by a Patrick.  The son Jeremiah is only 16, so don't think it is your family.  I haven't got Heaton Norris, so have asked Peter Bennett if he has access to it.

Re the Ramsdales.

My Great Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Ramsdale, Father Thomas Mother Jane all born Hindley.  Elizabeth married Peter Cunliffe (also of Hindley) in 1846.

Thanks Su...very interested in things Ramsdale. I have photos of my ggrandmother and family and photos of her parents (William & Jane b. 1816). I have recently made contact with the family of ggrandmother's brother who went from Stockport weaver to Mayor of Cardiff (1897)...all fascinating stuff.
I'm pretty sure that's not the right family. The 1841 census for Warrington SHOULD read. 1 Hope Street Warrington. William Ramsdale. 25. Head. Weaver. b. Hindley. Jane Ramsdale. 24. Wife. Weaver. b. Ireland. James Lawless Ramsdale. Son. 4. b. Warrington. Alice Ramsdale. Daughter. 2. b. Warrington. Christened March 29th 1840 St. Paul, Warrington.
The 1841 census for Hindley or Warrington MIGHT read...James Ramsdale. 45. Head. Draper. (then possibly) Anne Ramsdale. 45. William is in Warrington so possible children still at home could be...Bridget. 28. Alice. 25. Edmund. 23. Anything matching these would be great. Thanks for your efforts. Jim

Firstly, Peter Bennett said he had already looked on Heaton Norris 1851 some time ago for your Sheehans and couldn't find them.

I'm wondering if they lived somewhere else before they ended up in Stockport.

Secondly

Would you like me to look up 1841 Warrington and Hindley for your Ramsdales ?  Or has somebody already done it for you?

Thanks Su...I know I've looked for the Sheehans previously...in lots of places in lots of censuses...but I'm not entirely sure where...I would like to know if there are any traces of the Ramsdales in Hindley or Warrington...I have searched the Registers of Hindley 1644-1814 and compiled the Ramsdales into family groups...but there are gaps at vital points. I'm pretty sure I haven't tried the 1841 census because I wasn't aware that records went back that far when I was last researching...which I find for me is a seasonal activity...Thanks. Jim

I'll do Hindley first, as Warrington covers a huge area, and as there is no surname index, it means a page at a time, although Hope Street will help.

You'll have to bear with me, as the 1841's are extremely difficult to read in places.
