UPTON MAGNA Poole family and relatives
« on: Wednesday 05 October 05 19:11 BST (UK) »
Hello and greetings

If there is anyone out there with information regarding the Poole family of Shropshire [the specific place where one of my ancestors was born was UPTON MAGNA] some of whom migrated to STAFFORDSHIRE.  There might be a WELSH connection too, such as in Montgomeryshire where there were Poole people in the census.

I am trying to find the PARENTS AND FAMILY OF my POOLE family who lived in Upton Magna

My great-grandfather was born in Upton Magna Shropshire but I have never been able to locate his parents.  He was born about 1834, name of JOSEPH POOLE.

I know that Poole is fairly common in Wales, and wonder if any migrated towards Shropshire the neighbouring county.  This may have happened in the case above too.

Again you have my gratitude

IMISON

Hi Imison

Whilst I never totally trust the IGI, it does show a Joseph Poole being christened on 12 Oct 1834 at Upton Magna to parents Edwd. Poole and Mary.

Might be a starting point.

Hi again

Just checked the 1861 which is the earliest census I have access to and there is a family living in the Parish of Norton Canes, Staffs containing an Edward and Mary Poole, both born Shropshire (aged 53 & 52) along with children born in Staffs.

Let me know if you want the full details. Or perhaps I’m barking up the wrong tree?

Regards
John

Dear John

I am so grateful to you - I have been searching for the last 4 years for these people and, whilst you are correct that there is no certainty, it is at the very least an exciting possibility.

I shall now try to find out more about these people, as presumably they would be in a census somewhere, even if I have to wait until the 1850 census becomes more widely available.

Again, my gratitude to you for all your kindness in doing the research and contacting me.

Best wishes

Imison

Dear John

Yes, it must be the same family in all probability as my grandfather was registered in Norton Canes at one point [1881 I seem to remember].

I don't know how to thank you - this is wonderful news.

Best wishes

Dear John

Thank you so much for this.  I am not surprised about the coalminer bit because I had already made the connection that Joseph was a baker, as was one of his sons, in the mining village of BROWNHILLS.

So although FARMING was the background of some of the family - maybe Joseph was returning to his grandparents' roots in Shropshire or wherever.

I note that there are several vicars in the family as well as teachers, and there was a story of one of the family having an inn.  Also, that Joseph's family were in farming stock.

Maybe Edward could find better work as a coalminer than as a labourer, especially in the Industrial Revolution when enclosures had changed the way farming was conducted, and coal was rapidly becoming king.

I have always been fascinated by this period of history, so perhaps now I am beginning to appreciate why - as it had such a change on ordinary people, including my own great-great-great-grandparents not to mention their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Thank you again for all your help

Best wishes

Imison

Hi Imison

Do you have anymore names from the Poole family?
Do yo have any idea where the family lived?
Was Joseph Poole married to a lady named Eliza?
Did they run a pub called 'The last inn' from 1900 - 1935?

Thank you, Katie
