and the 1881

4 Bowling Green Walk

William Allen, head, age 27, blacksmith, born Worcester
Harriet Allen, wife, age 24, born Worcester
William Allen, son, age 1 born Worcester
George Allen, son, age 2 months, born Worcester

RG11/2917
folio 53 page 20
civil parish of Worcester Blockhouse

I have looked for a marriage for William and Harriet and this seems odd.

You say Herbert was born Bowling Green Walk, and that fits with 1881 and 1891 census. In 1891 there is a Mary Avery, wifes sister, but you have wife as Harriet Greenhill!

In 1875 there is a marriage of a William Allen to a Harriet Avery.

Hi
Here is the full entry from the free bmd entry which can be found at the following link,it is a very good source to lookup births, marriages and deaths, although it is not complete yet.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

William Allen
Harriet Avery
September quarter 1875
Droitwich
Vol 6c Page 523

and here is the entry for Herbert William Allen
March quarter 1894
District of Worcester
Vol 6c Page 307

with these details you will be able to obtain a copy of the birth certificate and verify his correct parents.

Hope this helps

Also, going back to 1871, I can see a Harriet Avery whose age fits:
RG10/3050 Folio 76 p. 14
St Martin, Worcestershire
N°3 Court Clap Gate N°1

Thomas Avery, head, 44, Shoe maker, b. Worcester
Eliza, wife, 35, Gloveress, b. Grimley Worcestershire
Harriet, dau, 15, Gloveress, b. Worcester
Harry, son, 7, b. do.
John, son, 5, b. do.
Sarah, dau, 3, b. do.
Alice, dau, 2, b. do.

If you search for them in 1881 on www.ancestry.co.uk or www.familysearch.org , you can see they have a daughter Mary A born ca. 1875

However, going yet 10 years back to 1861, I see Thomas is a widower with sons Thomas age 14, James age 12, Charles age 10, Albert age 6. No Harriet around.

Therefore Harriet probably isn't an Avery by birth, but Thomas's 2nd wife's daughter. I don't suppose we will find the marriage between Thomas and Eliza on FreeBMD (very poor marriage coverage on FreeBMD for this time frame) but I'll have a look.

I have looked on IGI and found this

Thomas Avery marrying an Elizabeth Greenhill  on 22 JUly 1865,his parents were William Avery and Margaret Philpott.

I will now take a look at the 1861 for Elizabeth Greenhill.

And also on IGI there is this

Harriet Greenhill christened 30 Aug 1857 St Martin Worcester

Mother Eliza Greenhill

This could solve the mystery! However can not find them in 1861.
