MUNSON/MONSON, UK, All dates
« on: Thursday 19 August 04 23:15 BST (UK) »
I have been undertaking a name study for the names Munson & Monson in the UK for about 12 years now.  I have the GRO indexes and lots of census information and family trees to connect fellow researchers.  1881 and 1901 census although on line have been further researched to establish correct information in many cases.

Though my own interest is in the Colchester area of Essex my research does cover all entries I can find for the whole UK and also Ireland as well as further extensions of family groups to other overseas countries.

Hi!
I am greatly interested in the surname Munson. I have little information but nonetheless, I am dedicated!

My Great Grandmother was named Mabel Munson, born about 1895. She was the daughter of a man whom I belive was named William Munson, and her mother may have been an Irish woman, possibly going by the name of O'Mara. Mabel had the following siblings: Kathleen 'Kitty', Nora (Norah), Victoria and William.
Father, William was believed to have been in the British Army, serving most noteably in India where Nora, Victoria and William were born. However, Mabel, being either the eldest or youngest was born in County Cork, Ireland. Mabel married firstly ?? Williams (possibly named Claude), and had three children with him. Then in 1922, Mabel married Harold Hopkins in Exeter and had three children with him including my Grandfather David Hopkins. Harold is my mother's paternal Grandfather.

You are welcome to keep my information, but any incite would be appreciated!

Thank you!

:)

Re 1851 entry for Crossland/Munson, Deptford 1851

Many thanks Bryant.  I had found Elizabeth Monson(nee Crossland) in the 1871 census living with her brother  James which shows name as Crossland.   This says she's born Portsea, Hants.  Not sure if they are the same place.

Crossland it is

You are right...had another look...it looked like a p but was the long s (which looks like f) followed by the little s, this making it look like p

The isle of wight is followed by what I thought was Hampshire?...but the H of Hampshire is formed exactly the same as what I thought is the K for Kingston! so I just stated Isle of Wight...is their such a place as Hingston, Hampshire?
