manchester Regiment 1890's
« on: Wednesday 12 October 05 18:12 BST (UK) »
Could any one PLEASE help me locate my granddads record in the Manchester Regt. He was James Gallagher possibly (Galligan)  from Oldham. Born Heywood 1871. Birth certificate says Galligan. Think this is wrong interpration of the name, family from him down known as Gallagher.
I have a photo of him, looks to be WW1 time he his with a group of men with 2 women at the front. On this photo granddad has Sgt stripes. He looks to be in khaki the man to his left looks to be in a colour. (Sepia photo) There is another Sgt and a Cpl.
He looks old on this photo. the photo was taken in Oldham in the background you can make out tents. I wondered if he was traing troops. I know he had children through the war times. If it was 1918 he would be 47.
I don't know where to start looking for him.
I did get a Pte James Gallagher's medal card. But I don't know if its the correct person.
I can't find Granddad on the 1891 or 1901 census.
I seem to remember my dad saying he was in the Boar War. A new found cousin told me that Granddad had a red Jacket with a sphinx at the collar. Would this be correct?
I hope someone can help me. I went to the Museum in Ashton but didn't have much luck there.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I especially want info on my granddad
regards
