Mold High Street 1851
« on: Saturday 15 October 05 12:45 BST (UK) »
My husband's Gx2 grandfather is recorded in the 1851 census as living in the High St, Mold, occupation Publican.

Can anyone help me with possible pub names from that place and time please?

Thanks!

Hi there,

The pubs on High Street, Mold are as follows:
1.The Dolphin---still open. Not sure if it was there in 1851.
2.The Griffin-----                        do.
3.The Black Lion. Now closed.I think this would have been
there in 1851.I'm fairly certain it has the reputation of
being the oldest pub in the town. There is a blue plaque
on the building.Next time I'm in town I'll see what it says.

Best of luck in your research..... :)

Thanks Llwyd!

I've asked on the 'Look Up Rrequests' page for David's neighbours on the 1851 census so that might give me a guide as to which pub he lived in.

This is all assuming he lived in the pub of course...!

Hi there,

As promised re the Black Lion, the plaque says 'formerly an 18th century inn, posting house and meeting place for elections'.

There was also another pub on the High St which I forgot about as it is now a shop.I think it was called the Market Vaults.

Hiya,

Thanks for this list.

Another poster here told us recently out that David probably lived in the Roper's Arms in 1871 but they weren't sure if the spelling was right.  His neighbours were a Fruiterer and Basket Maker and on the other a Journeyman Shoemaker.

Now we know it was the Roper's Arms for sure!

Sadly there isn't a Roper's Arms now so we can't go and have a drink to great great grandad :( but hopefully one day, we'll be able to locate the actual building.

Thanks again for your help.
