Garvey family
« on: Saturday 15 October 05 19:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have tracked my family back to Kerry via the London 1871/81 censuses
1871 census 3 East Row, St Ann Limehouse
Michael Garvey   60   labourer   Kerry
Ellen Garvey   50      Kerry
Jno Garvey   17      Kerry
Michael Garvey   14      Kerry
Patsey Garvey   11      Kerry
Dennis Garvey   9      Kerry
Thomas Pratt   21   lodger   Middx
Jno Dewine   30   Visitor   Ireland

1881 census 3 Clements Cottages, Frenches Fields, St Nicholas Deptford
Michael Garvey   70   Foundry labourer   Kerry
Ellen Garvey   60      Kerry
Michael Garvey   23   Foundry labourer   Ballyunion
Patrick Garvey   21   Foundry labourer   Ballyunion
Dennis Garvey   18   Fireman journeyman   Ballyunion

After some digging I think Ballyunion is the same place as Ballybunnion - can anyone confirm that ?

Also how do I go about tracing them in Ireland ?  It looks like they moved to London between 1862-1871.  Are there any census or parish records I can get to ?

thanks in advance,

Julie

Hello Julie,

Grittiths Valuation of Ireland, Co. Kerry (1852) shows several families with the Garvey surname. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php.

You can have a holiday if you wish at the Garvey Farmhouse, Kilvicadownig, Ventry, Dingle, County Kerry www.garveysfarmhouse.com The proprietors are Joan and Tom Garvey. You never know, they may be distant relatives.

You may strike lucky and find something on the Co. Kerry Online records. www.rootsweb.com/~irlker

Best Wishes, Christopher

Hi Christopher,

thanks for those links.  I had already found that the Dingle was a stronghold of the Garvey's.  Although I think mine probably came from a bit further north.  I did visit the Dingle on my honeymoon, in a tent though !

Will wander off and look at those sites now.
