1871 Census Lookup Please For William J Rossiter
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 08:52 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for information about William J Rossiter and his wife Elizabeth. William was born in 1829 in Sinning, Oxfordshire. He was an ironmonger.

William & Elizabeth later moved to Dorking, Surrey and some of the children were born there.

William is a widower in 1881.I'm trying to link him with Wiliam Shearburn Rossiter who I think is his son.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.TIA.

Best wishes

There is a family of SHEARBURNs further up the road, but she is not with them.  Will scribe them in a minute.  Can't see the wife (are we certain her name is Elizabeth?  Could she be off having a baby somewhere?  Any idea where she was born?)

There is also this little chap:

Hi Arranroots / Cat

Many thanks for that.

Never realised that the spirit of competition to deal with posts was so fierce at Rootschat!!

Can one of you please post Elizabeth's year and place of birth  from the visit to William Rudge? I can use the info to track further back. It looks like the Rossiters and the Shearburns are related so Elizabeth the wife must be Elizabeth Shearburn ( Sherburne). Is that how you see it?

Must admit I'm a little confused by William Shearburn Rossiter. I have him as baptised on November 8th 1867 at Dorking, Surrey so I expected to find him with the rest of his family in the 1871 Census. He'd be too young to have left home, so either he's died or he's staying elsewhere.

What do you think?

Best wishes
