Hi Arranroots,

Many thanks for that. It looks like William Rossiter married Elizabeth Sherburne/Shearburn ( born 1845 in Dorking Surrey).

She gave birth to Helen in 1864.

She then gave birth to William Shearburn Rossiter in 1868 but he died at or soon after birth and then she died 2 years later herself.

Is that how you read the situation?

Looks very likely to me.  Just need the certs to prove it!

Shame we didn't think about BMD until the end! 

There is another birth, Alice Shearburn ROSSITER about 1865 from memory, who also died before 1871.

Sad old time for that family.

Thanks for that. Certainly was a bad time.

I've tried to find a year of marriage on FreeBMD but I can't find it. Looks like there may be other chldren unless Alice was the first and then they had Helen Lizzie followed by William.
