Missing Lady in 1871 census
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 17:03 BST (UK) »
I have recently found the death of James A Breakspear who died in 1951 aged 80. This means I can now say that James was probably born in 1871.

So I thought I would take a look and see where his mother was in the 1871 census but I am unable to find her. Below are all the entries for her in the 1861, 1881, and 1891 census she is called Ann French in the last but apparently did not marry. She sadly died in 1892 and so of you may have seen my posting about this before.

1861 census
62 Holywell Street, Oxford
Ann Breakspear b. 1839 Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, Servant to the Perkins family

1881 census
55 Nelson St, Oxford St Thomas
Ann Breakspeare b. 1842 Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, Housekeeper for John French

1891 census
5 Worcester St, Oxford, St Mary Magdalene
Ann French b. 1839 Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, wife to John French

If I can find out where Ann was in 1871 perhaps I can find the birth of James A Breakspear which I have been looking for, for the last year.

Cheers Lisa

Not sure if I am going over old ground - have you seen this?

Have you checked 1837 online for a possible birth?

This is a possibility for 1871 census;

James Breakspear 1868  Hardwick, Oxfordshire, England
Hannah Clack 1802  Stanton Harcourt Wife
James Clack 1801  Stanton Harcourt Head

Living at Stanton Harcourt

RG10/1450 Folio 145 Pg 4

James could be living with his grand-parents?, though the relationship is not stated on the census.

Thank you for your replies,

I do have the birth certificate for james born 1870 but his mother is Elizabeth and father William.

There is also a death for Jun 1870 - Breakspear    James    aged 0    Witney which I think is the James above.

Ann Breakspear was not married when James was born and there has been no connection found with the Clack adn breakspear family.

If James was living with the Clacks this still does not show where Ann is and no birth has been found for James in 1868.

Please keep posting possibilities in case there are any I have missed.

Thank you once again.

Have you or has anyone else checked 1871 - if not - I will - but this offer is only for a limited period. The site is so slow I get bored quickly.

Of course she may not have registered him under the circumstances or, as some did, went elsewhere to have him

I had a look on ancestry in the 1871 but I have been unsucessful in finding Ann on there.

If you would be so kind that would be great.

I think I need to find Ann in 1871 that may give me more idea about if James was registered and maybe anyone who may have been his father.

Cheers Lisa
