George Arstall (b circa 1795)
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I posted the message below to the Lancahire section of this board a week or so back but, to date have had no response. As there is possibly Cheshire interest as well I am copying it here in the hope that someone can help.Sorry if some of you have seen the original message in the Lancashire section.
Thanks,
Tony

 Hello all,
First time on this board so I hope I'm asking the right questions!
I am doing research of the Arstall family on behalf of my wife. We have hit a brick wall but have a possible link to take us further back if we can find the "missing links"!
We have traced back to George Arstall who was born circa 1795. He married Alice Nelson
circa 1814/15. Alice was born in Farnworth (with Kearsley) about 1796. They had 9 children - all in Farnworth, starting with Joseph in 1815, James in 1818, Mary in 1819 etc. Their last child, Jane was born circa 1828. George was a shoemaker. He had died by the 1841 census as Alice is shown as a widow.
Their marriage date/place is uncertain but there is a marriage entry for George Arstol in the Deane Parish Registers November 3rd 1814 which fits. However, the spouses name is missing for a few entries at that time so I am not 100% sure. Possibly the Bishop's Transcripts may help but I do not have access to them currently.
I do not have George's birth date or place either but there are two clues on the IGI which have been verified in parish records.. The first is a George  Arstall baptised 12 July 1795 (born 15 June 1795) in Hollins Green to Joseph and Mary Arstall (Shoemaker). The second is a George Arstall baptised 22 November  1795 (born 05 Nov 1795) to Hugh and Mary Arstall (Carpenter) of Cadishead.
I believe that Joseph and Hugh were brothers - sons of George Arstall & Jane Wadsworth (Married 29 Feb 1756 in Warrington) - hence the reference to a possible missing link.
Finally, I have no details of George's death which was almost certainly before Civil Registration but certainly between 1827 and 1841, probably in or near Farnworth.
The main thing I need is details of George's father which, hopefully, would be on the marriage record.
Any help or advice will be much appreciated.
I appreciate that part of the above strays into Cheshire territory - should I copy this to the Cheshire section?
Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony
I happen to have the CD of Hollinfare Baptisms 1654-1837.  Marriages 1705-1744, and Burials 1709-1837.

George's burial is not on it, but if Joseph the shoemaker, Hollin, is his father, then his is 25 Oct 1801.

I have many Arstall Births and Baptisms, and Burials, you may already have these, but if not and you would like a list of them please let me know.

Kind regards

Hi Su,

Thanks for the reply. If George came from Hollinfare, then I am assuming that Joseph was his father. My Lancashire/Cheshire geography is not too hot but I believe Farnworth is only about 12 miles from Hollinfare. I have found a group of Arstall researchers who are descended from Joseph but I need to find the "missing link" if it exists to prove Joseph's son George is one and the same as the George I have traced my wife's ancestry back to.

Thanks very much for the offer of the list. I have sent you a PM.

Regards,
Tony
