ec thank you very much......the saga of Jonas gets worse not better with more details found.  Jonas was a stone mason and seemed to travel the country presumably for work.  His mothers maiden name was DENNISON, but why Sarah was using that name I do not known unless she was not married.  They only childs birth cert I have is my grandfathers and that shows mother Sarah WHITHAM nee CARTWRIGHT.  Me thinks Jonas and Sarah were married after the first child was born and that's why I can not find it before the 1st childs birth.  In total Jonas had 17 children...6 by his 1st wife and 11 by Sarah...my grandfather being the last.  They seemed to be born all over the country until about 1875 when he seems to have settled in Manchester.  Like most people tracing their family there seems to be one of the ancestors you would most like to meet and Jonas is mine...if nothing else but to sort out his marriages etc.

Hi

If his mothers name was Dennison, then I would guess he was illegitimate, with his mother later marrying a WHITHAM and him using this name along with the rest of the family.  I have seen this a couple of times before (and carrying on through a number of generations), that occasionally on 'official' stuff the person would revert to their 'real' name.  Given that Sarah appears to know (when she is on her own in 1871) that their real surname is Dennison, I would guess he married her using that name.  You may also find some of the children registered as Dennison, rather than Whitham.

Another spanner in the works here :)

A corresponding entry for Sep 1862 7a 565 Sleaford, where Sarah Cartwright is listed.

William Kidson Dennison

Would explain why Sarah was calling herself Dennison?

Thanks again to all....but it gets even worse...Jonas WHITHAM was married to Charlotte nee DURHAM but he was her second husband.  Her first was called WILLIAM KITSON...which is to similar to William Kidson DENNISON to be a coincidence or is it. Have sent off for the marriage cert hoping that will clear some of the very muddy waters at the moment.

PS Jonas wasn't a 'bar steward'....his father was Jonas WHITHAM who married Elizabeth DENNISON in 1822 at Wakefield.

Thanks for all your help once again.

Just re-checked for you Alan and it was definitely written Kidson on the GRO index. Sounds like a classic alias, but why?

Please let us know how you get on. Good luck!

Hi

another couple that may give you a lead are

Amelia DENNISON sept 1871 Highworth (swindon)
 and

Martha DENNISON sept 1873 Sleaford

There do not appear to be any birth entries for these children undr WHITHAM and seeing as Sarah was using DENNISON in 1871, it may be worth a shot - at least if the father is Jonas DENNISON you would be reasonable to assume its the same couple under another name
