I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: Monday 17 October 05 17:44 BST (UK) »
I have my 4xgrandfather, Hugh Tooley, who gives his birthplace as Whitehaven.

I've checked BVRI and IGI and come up with nothing.  I really don't know where to start as I have no geographical knowledge of the area, what churches existed in the time frame and what records are available and where.

Any advice would be appreciated.  He was born about 1828 and his parents are Robert Tooley, a Plasterer, and Rose Ann/Rosanna

Thanks

Alyson

Found this but you probably already have the info:

I see in 1861 he is Hugh Toole and aged 28, which would make his birth ca. 1833. Do you already have this?

Tanja  :)

If you google Whitehaven+genuki you will find this which might help: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CUL/Whitehaven/

And he's aged 39 in 1871 RG10/3652 108 44

Hi Tanja

Thanks for that.  Yep, I have him on every census apart from 1841...transcribed as Texley in 1891!

He really can't decide when he was born, he even states Liverpool as his birthplace on one census although I've checked the parish registers there (2 of his siblings were born there) and I can find nothing for him.

Basing his age on the census when he was at home with his mother (1851), his marriage cert and his death cert, all are consistent with a birth year of 1828/1829

I just don't have a clue where to start looking

Andrew

That's brilliant, thank you so much.....I'm going to revise my initial thoughts on Hugh now, though.

We received his marriage certificate yesterday...1851 and he was a minor so think he was adding years on to make himself older on the census.  Either that or he had no idea when he was actually born

Think we're going to have to see whether the RO do any kind of search service as there's no way I can get to Whitehaven, so at least all this info now narrows down what I'll need to ask for (I'm disabled and Ali's in the States!)

Many thanks again
