Hello John

1861 census 3677 folio 6 page 5 Newsham, Kirby Ravensworth

Samuel Powell  head Un 49 farmer 270 acres employing 5 ag labs  born West Layton
Thomas Powell  bro   Un 58               Ditto                                        born Hartforth Grange
In the house 2 Females 40 and 16 and two males 17 and 15 all servants.

1841 census no results at Newsham so had a look at West Layton
1246 folio 6 page 3
Living at At Layton Hall
Samuel Powell 70 Farmer
Mary Powell     60
Samuel            25
John                20
Baxter             15
All born in Yorkshire

In the house were 4 more people not Powell
A further Powell John age 20 ag lab was at nearby Dalton
Remember for the 1841 census the ages of persons over 15 was rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0

1871 census 4877 folio 9 page 12
Samuel at the same farm employing 5 ag labs and 5 servants in house.
Thomas 68 at the farm but retired.

I will check the 1851 if you think it will throw up anything else.

Hello Oli,

Thanks for your researches and results, I belive that thomas died in 1892 but do not know about Samuel.
Your offer to check 1851 accepted with thanks, this could furnish some additional info about Mary Powell.

Best wishes,

John.

Hello again John,

1851 census 2381/3 page 451b Newsham

Samuel Powell head Un 39 Farmer 270 acres 1 lab          born Yorks Layton
Thomas Powell brother Un 48  Annuitant                       born Yorks Layton
Robert Palmer visitor Widr 71  Annuitant                       born  Yorks Barton

In the house were 2 female and 3 male  servants

Did see a death for Samuel Joseph Powell age 64 registered 1874 Bradford 9b 109 Dec quarter.
Age OK place ??? middle name Joseph ???. doubtful.
I don't think I would have wanted to retire to Bradford from an area like Newsham.
The 1851 comes on line soon, be able to trace them all then. Small villages like Newsham and West Layton are easy to trawl through the CD,s but I would not tackle larger places without some clues as to where to go.

Regards Oly
